Our first litter - Born 13th March 2014

The weekend before Annie was due her breeder called me and we spent over an hour the phone where she gave me guidance and reassurance. It was of course being our first litter (and first ever Entlebucher Sennehund litter)very new to us so we went in blind and with very little knowledge of what to do other than a book hubby bought me. Books are great but never prepare you for the reality.

The weekend before we were outside gardening, now the book says the girl will start to burrow and make a den for her pups, Annie is too precious to do this so our Westie Billy did the burrowing which was very funny, he worked so hard he was exhausted by the end of it!

I slept with Annie 7 days before her due date which meant I had to sleep with her snoring and my hubbys snoring who slept right above me. On the Wednesday night she started the panting and usually (according to the book) this means she will whelp the following night when it is dark and cold to avoid preditors.

Hubby wanted to breed more for the experience to watch the birth and the nursing of the pups from the start.  

Thursday comes and I am exhausted by around 3pm ish. So I say to hubby I’m going for a nap with Annie as I think tonight is going to be a long one, he pops out to pick up the kids from school, I am just about to go to sleep with my Annie and then she gets up and squeals, out pops our first ever Entlebucher Mountain dog pup rolling under the sofa, I quickly roll him out and Annie the super star she is gets to work on him to remove his sack and then to clean him and get his lungs working. I move her and Albus into the whelping room, hubby gets back, I tidy up then hubby goes to drop one of the kids off to a lesson.

During this time Annie decides to leave her pup, and sit on the bed I have been sleeping on with her, I put Albus onto his heated mat and within minutes out pops out number two Aberforth, after she has cleaned him I move him into the whelping box and attach both pups to mum to feed. Hubby comes home at this stage and sits with me in delight at our Annie and her two new puppies. Hubby then has to go to pick up one of the children he had dropped off for a lesson and guess what ……within minutes from him leaving out popped out our first girl Andromeda, Annie clearly saw how tired I was from cleaning up after her so delivered her in the whelping box.

I cleaned the box up in time for hubby to get back, we sat together on my make shift bed watching our beautiful Annie look after her lovely litter. Finally the moment arrived where hubby was going to get the experience he wanted and out popped Arthur. Arthur was the largest of the pups, hubby likes the males most and when it came to weighing or feeding hubby seemed to always pick up Arthur. He went to a family whom the primary hooman in his life was a lady, she messaged me 6 months after she had picked him up and said that he was her’s without a doubt BUT he did seem to prefer men over women…..not sure why!
